Repost: Nike World Cup ad 'curse' claims almost all its stars

This was an interesting article and an entertaining ad.

***

When the New York Times soccer blog Goal first suggested that the celebrity footballers who appeared in Nike's now famous "Write the Future" ad might be cursed, there were still plenty of questions left unanswered. It's true that Ronaldinho hadn't even been selected for Brazil by manager Dunga, and Franck Ribery had gone out early along with an ignomonious France.

But a week ago, Rooney, although in poor form, was still in the tournament. Retiring Cannavaro and Italy had yet to crash out 3-2 to underdogs Slovakia; Didier Drogba, while recovering from an elbow injury, was still in the World Cup with the Ivory Coast (barely); and Landon Donovan and Tim Howard were, pre-Ghana at least, real American heroes.

[Photos: See more of Wayne Rooney and Landon Donovan]

Now it looks like the ad is a better predictor of World Cup outcomes than Paul the octopus. Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu's four minute spot has ripped through the chances of almost every one of its featured World Cup hopefuls like David Villa running through a Honduran back four. Goal-less Rooney is at the centre of blame for an under-performing England, Cannavaro represents a past-it Italian defense that let in 5 goals on 6 shots on target, and African hope Ivory Coast collapsed in the group stage with Drogba scoring only one goal.

Now the world will nervously watch Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal face off against Spain in the round of 16 match this Tuesday evening to see if the curse will claim its final victims. Ronaldo has not been in great form since the start of the World Cup, and the ad's Spanish contingent has already encountered several problems: Andres Iniesta picked up a slight knock the other day, Gerard Pique's head has become everyone's favourite bloody pin-cushion, and Cesc Fabregas has grown a really ugly beard.

[Photos: See more of Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo]

Thankfully, the ad's non-footballing celebrities seem to be holding up well. Roger Federer is still in Wimbledon (although he's lost his number one ranking to Nadal), Kobe Bryant has an NBA championship (even though he went cold in game 7, letting Artest come up big), and Homer Simpson and The Simpsons are still on the air through 2011 (although the show hasn't been good in years).

On second thought...this ad is pure evil.

Repost: How Kobe Inspired a Young Messi

I liked this. I'm not a Kobe fan but I thought that was cool of him.

JOHANNESBURG – With a few casual words, spaced between bites of his lunch, Kobe Bryant chalked up an assist in helping modern soccer’s greatest player achieve his full potential.

It was the 2008 Beijing Olympics and Bryant, just a few days short of leading basketball’s Team USA to the gold medal, spotted some members of the Argentina men’s soccer team huddled around a table in an athletes village food court.

“Where’s Messi?” Bryant demanded. “I want to see Lionel Messi.”

Soon enough, the Los Angeles Lakers star was locked in conversation with Messi, then 21 and with the soccer world at his feet, in Spanish.

Bryant was 29 and had long since established himself as a man of the world. Messi, already a superstar in his own sport with both his national team and Spanish club Barcelona, was more shy back then than he is today, even with millions in the bank and the chance to lead Argentina to an Olympic gold medal.

The American did most of the talking. And as he left with a handshake and a wave, Bryant turned over his shoulder and uttered words Messi has carried with him since.

“You’re the man, Messi,” Bryant said. “You’re the best. You’re not just good, you’re the best.”

They were just a few words, but they resonated with the young Argentinean.

“It was important to me what he said,” admitted Messi, whose next date with destiny will be at Soccer City on Sunday when Argentina takes on Mexico in the World Cup’s round of 16. “One of the best things about being successful in sport is getting the chance to meet these people who are legends in what they do.

“It was one of the reasons I so wanted to play in the Olympics, to have that experience of mixing with athletes from all around the world. And what Kobe Bryant told me made me think a little.”

At the time of the Beijing Games, Brazil’s Kaka was the reigning FIFA World Player of the Year. Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal was about to surpass him. Messi was still knocking on the door.

Yet the following European club soccer season, Messi began his surge toward greatness. Leading Barcelona to an unprecedented three-championship run with titles in the Spanish league, Spanish King’s Cup and Champions League was more than enough for him to be finally acclaimed as the planet’s elite player.

“Meeting Kobe, it made me think about who he is and what he has achieved,” Messi said. “Even when he got to a very high level of success it was not enough. He continued to push himself and challenge himself. That is a great mentality for an athlete to have. It makes you think, ‘If he has this kind of mentality, why not me, too?’

“I love football and I am driven to improve, but yes, I think it did give me a little extra inspiration.”

First Foreign NBA Owner, New Nets Owner Mikhail Prokhorov

I like him more than Mark Cuban. Of course, I like a lot of people better than Mark Cuban.

But seriously, this was an entertaining interview. I'm interested to see the Nets' development.
(Of course, I'm still a loyal Spurs fan, that won't change).

Repost: NBA Power Rankings: Top 10 All-Stars That Could Become Great Head Coaches

That's Timmy alright.

By Bhemis Parks

#5

Tim Duncan is arguably thee most accomplished front-line player of all-time. He has five distinctions of NBA MVP (1 All-Star, 2x NBA MVP, and 2x Finals MVP), and four NBA Championships to boast.

Yet still Tim Duncan is as humble and classy an individual one can meet. His cerebral approach to the game is as broad as any other in the history of pro sports. The man has been a dominant figure since the moment he entered the NBA.

His leadership is unmistakable, as he and his Spurs club are the biggest reason Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant’s Lakers clubs didn’t win six plus Championships.

His ability to counsel and motivate his teammates is one of the most under-appreciated accomplishments of the past two or three decades of NBA play. He would without a doubt have no problem doing the same with any player who would have the fortune of playing under his leadership.

San Antonio Spurs' fans get your thumbs ready as the Spurs' roster has been announced for the upcoming NBA Jam for the Nintendo Wii and the NBA Elite 11 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Here is the lineup for the Spurs: Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili (players). David Robinson and George Gervin (legends). The combinations of these five players will be awesome.

Now Spurs fans can see a Parker-Gervin backcourt, team up Duncan and Robinson once again to relive the "Twin Towers" era or finally see two of the best shooting-guards in Spurs' history, Ginobili and Gervin, play together.

Game to be released on October 5.

Repost: The Double Life of Kirk Long

Proud of Kirk.

***
By Mav C. Gonzales

Getting to know Kirk Long on and off the court.

On court, Ateneo's shooting guard Kirk Long is intense. His moves are calculated. He runs too fast. Some people ask why he didn't join the track team. But off the court, he leads a double life as the doting "Kuya Kirk" of homeless kids.

Kirk and his family moved to the Philippines in 1991, but it wasn't only until 2003 when they decided to build a home for children. While eating at McDonald's, Kirk's younger sister Janel noticed the streetkids begging outside the restaurant. She then asked, "Why can't we do more for these kids?"

From that one idea at McDonald's was born New Faith Family Children's Home. It has since expanded into two branches: 34 kids stay in Antipolo while 26 more are housed in Malaybalay.

"It's basically a 24/7 home for the kids. They eat, sleep and study there," Kirk's dad Jeff explains.

Growing up, Kirk says he had a lot of role models. They made him a better person. Now, it's his turn to be a role model to these kids. He volunteers by teaching the kids basketball. He also takes them out for food, coaches local leagues, and does devotions with them at night. Bringing his dogs to the Children's Home has also become quite a habit.

What's most notable about the Children's Home is kids are always present at Kirk's games. It's impossible to miss 30 kids plus 20 guardians wearing Kirk's #12 jersey.

The idea of bringing kids to games came from the Long family since they want to share this part of Kirk's life.

"They're often at the games, so it's easy to forget that what they're doing is actually special. I know that this chapter of my life won't last for long. Seeing the kids watch me is a good reminder for me to be thankful for where I am right now," he says.

After so many games, have the kids already adopted the Ateneo way? "They do know some of the cheers. Our caregivers are fanatics and they teach the cheers to the kids," Jeff says.

Just last Wednesday, Kirk celebrated his 22nd birthday. Aside from celebrating with his teammates, he also took the kids to the cinema. Their movie of choice?

"Despicable Me!" Kirk quips. Pretty fitting for someone who's adopted so many kids into his life.

Excerpt from Groundbreaking hit Super Mario Bros. celebrates 25th birthday

by Mike Smith

Five things you (possibly) didn't know about Mario:
  • Mario’s last name is also Mario. He’s Mario Mario, in fact.
  • His first appearance was actually in 1981 in the arcade version of Donkey Kong, where he was known as “Jumpman.” He wouldn’t get his official name until the following year’s Donkey Kong Jr., also the only game where he plays the bad guy.
  • Not only is Mario the best-selling video game character of all time, he’s also its most prolific: according to Guinness World Records’s 2008 edition, he’s appeared in 116 separate games.
  • Mario’s distinctive high-pitched voice is provided by actor Charles Martinet, who also voices Mario’s brother Luigi and his longtime foe Wario.
  • Nintendo released a follow-up to Super Mario Bros. in Japan in 1986, but deemed it too difficult for Western audiences. It wouldn’t hit U.S. shores as a standalone title until 2007, as a Wii Virtual Console title dubbed “Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels.”

Repost: The Draft Class Of 2010

I'm a Nonoy Baclao fan. I bought his little paper stand thing during the 2008 Bonfire. I have an I AM NONOY shirt. I prioritized getting his autograph and having my picture taken with him.

I love the way he plays. I love his humility.

"Top overall pick Noy Baclao is still in disbelief that he had been blessed with such an opportunity."

I was not surprised that he'd be the #1 draft pick. I'd be more surprised if he wasn't.

I've always been a Purefoods fan because of the Captain. I've never been a solid fan of any other team (I'd cheer for San Miguel occasionally because that was my lolo's team, but pit them against each other and my loyalties lie with Purefoods).

But now that Nonoy's playing for Air21, whom I ironically cheered against this past PBA Playoffs, I think I will be rooting for Air21. I might even root for them when they go up against the Llamados. Okay, Alvin's the B-Meg GM, but I am a Nonoy Baclao fan. If Alvin suits up for B-Meg, then fine, I will root against Nonoy's team.

Another plus is that another Atenean Rabeh Al-Husseini is playing for them. I'm not quite sure where Jai is playing, but if he plays for Air21 too then I'm definitely cheering for them.

Seeing former Blue Eagles whom I got to watch pretty closely during my college years play in the PBA gives me a reason to tune into the PBA more. It's honestly making me more interested in the PBA. I guess the PBA has to thank the UAAP for that. I didn't get to watch Enrico (I wasn't even in ADMU yet when he played), L.A., Larry, or JC play much back then so I'm not as interested in watching them now. I don't feel as bad cheering against them. I did in fact cheer against them during this past PBA finals, but as fellow Ateneans, I was happy for them.

Of course my ideal scenario would be Nonoy, Rabeh, and Jai in a Llamados uniform (if you want to get totally crazy about it, throw in Chris Tiu, if he decides to play in the PBA, and Eric Salamat, when he graduates which I of course dread for the Blue Eagles but that's life). But until then, I will be cheering for Nonoy regardless of what team he plays for (just please not Ginebra).

The Draft Class Of 2010

By Patricia Bermudez-Hizon – August 31st, 2010

600pba_2010draft

The Score by Patricia Bermudez-Hizon
Special to Yahoo! Southeast Asia

The recently concluded PBA Rookie draft was all about dreams coming true, triumph and despair. For 19 of the players that got selected, this is just the beginning. For the other 41, this isn’t necessarily the end.

Top overall pick Noy Baclao is still in disbelief that he had been blessed with such an opportunity. Coach Yeng Guiao of the Air21 Express said that they really see a lot of promise in Baclao and is looking forward to whipping the team to a championship contender. They also have 2nd overall pick, former UAAP MVP Rabeh Al-Husseini and Smart Gilas teammate Rey Guevara in their old.

Talk and Text initiated the first trade move on the floor, asking Alaska to give up sweet shooting Larry Fonacier which they did to get the rights to pick 4th overall. The Aces used it to get the high leaping Elmer Espiritu. At 5th, Fil-am shooter Josh Vanlandigham was selected by Rain or Shine.

Air 21 picked Fil-Canadian Sean Anthony from McGill University in Montreal at 6th. He had his grandparents, cousins, and uncle Dodo Dee who is the husband of Presidential sister Viel Aquino-Dee. Before the day ended, he had already been traded to the Powerade Tigers (formerly Coca Cola Tigers) for the team’s 1st round draft pick in 2012. In the same agreement, Air21 also traded Ren Ren Ritualo to the Tigers for the 2nd round draft pick in 2012.

When John Wilson was called up to be Ginebra’s pick at 7th overall, Siot Tanquincen also went up onstage as Coach Jong Uichico’s new assistant. Despite being a former NCAA MVP, many still question why Ginebra drafted yet another guard. But it has been said before that Ginebra is looking to prepare for the team’s future with majority of their players above 30 years of age already. With an equally impressive showing in the collegiate and amateur ranks, Ginebra also selected Jimbo Aquino at 8th overall.

Predicted to go late in the 2nd round, Parri Llagas proved many wrong by being 9th overall, selected by the B-Meg Derby Ace Llamados. “I’m very surprise they chose me, but Coach Gallent knows me well. I’m a workhorse”, shared Llagas. Coach George Gallent was accompanied his new assistant coaches Richard del Rosario formerly of the Elastopainters, and Art dela Cruz, who used to be with San Miguel.

To cap off the first round, the Aces decided to trade the option to the new Meralco Bolts franchise for the young and promising Bon Bon Custodio who was picked 8th overall just 2 years ago by the Beermen and was traded to the Sta. Lucia Realtors last season. The Bolts’ young coach Ryan Gregorio went with Fil-Am Sean Weinstein who played as a pro in the Israel Premier League’s Maccabi Netanya team for two years. Weinstein impressed in the rookie camp with his steadiness, maturity and intensity.

11 picks were scheduled in the 2nd round with the 11th overall given to Meralco as a concession approved by the PBA Board. The Bolts stayed on stage waiting for Commissiner Chito Salud to announce that they selected Bam Gamalinda of San Beda.

People scratched their heads when Ginebra got another guard with their 2nd pick in the 2nd round. Though Rob Labagala has been known to play hard which got him the opportunity to play in the Asian Basketball League and could be valuable when they play 5 guards.

Coach Gallent picked Val Acuna who is also an ABL veteran, at lucky 13th overall. Another former Atenean who got drafted in the 2nd round, Ford Arao breathed a sigh of relief when he was called. Fortunately for him, the Meralco Bolts are relying on the draft to build their lineup.

Former Gilas player RJ Jazul fell deep in the draft after many thought he’d go in the first round. But to get him, the Rain or Shine Elastopainters had to trade a future draft pick to the Alaska Aces. Another Philippine Patriots veteran and former UST Growling Tiger Khasim Mirza went to the Bolts who selected 16th.

The only pick that the Barako Coffee Masters had was 17th overall which they got from the Ogie Menor trade. How funny that another former Red Lion would benefit from this. They went with Borgy Hermida.

Air21 had initially decided to pass on their 18th, but before it could be announced, Governor Ramos rushed to the official’s table to clarify that they had just traded the right to Powerade who selected Jai Reyes from ADMU. It was actually funny that Powerade then passed on the right to pick 19th but maybe this was part of the whole Ritualo-Anthony deal with the Express. Air 21 didn’t even bother to exercise their right to pick 10th in the 2nd round.

With only one chance remaining, the batch of applicants just prayed hard that their name would be called. For Marvin Hayes, prayers were indeed answered. Coach Tim saw that Hayes is definitely a hardworker and was pleased with how the day turned out for them. Next on their to do list is Disneyland.

The PBA will start season 36 on October 3, complete with teams parading with muses, dance numbers, and a stellar opening game between Meralco and Ginebra.
